Dry skin
is a problem that affects a large percentage of the population and can be
downright uncomfortable for most. Causes of dry skin vary; however, lack of
proper hydration is the most common reason. Dry skin is characterized by a
thin, paper-like texture that feels dry to the touch, usually resulting in
irritation or itchiness. It is a problem
that can be treated and prevented utilizing the proper nutritional, hydration,
activity, and skin care product tips.
According
to many studies made by dermatologists, weather changes can be a large factor,
which causes dry skin. When the air
cools and wind chill picks up, the moisture is swept from our skin and fine
layer of dead, dried, skin cells remains, compiling into a thicker layer as
time goes by. "Once the
weather starts to change, I see patients coming in complaining of dry, itchy
skin," says Linda Stein Gold, MD, clinical research director for the
dermatology department at Detroit's Henry Ford Hospital. If not treated
properly, dry skin causes a pointless distraction to a fully functioning
day.
Other
than the weather, there are many internal factors that can be the cause of this
common condition. According to William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR, “internal factors include overall
health, age, genetics, family history, and a personal history of other medical
conditions like asthma, allergies, and atopic dermatitis. In particular those
with thyroid disease are more prone to developing dry skin.
Occasionally, a dry
skin problem can be a sign of an internal medical condition. For instance,
aging may inherently make people more prone to developing dry skin.”
The worst form of
dry skin is the one that is self-inflicted. Many people are not aware, but they could
actually be adding fuel to the fire with some of the products that they feel
are the “solution”. Alcohol, or chemical
based products like many brands of soaps, “moisturizers or lotions”, along with
anti-bacterial hand sanitizers actually cause more damage to the skin, than
good. Alcohol and many of the chemicals
in certain products absorb and release the hydration out of the cells. So if your lotion feels good for about five
minutes, but then you feel like you need more, you are using a product designed
to keep you “addicted” by providing a short-term solution to a long-term
problem.
External
factors that cause dry skin include
·
over-washing with harsh soaps
·
over-use of sanitizers and cleaning
agents (alcohol)
·
cold temperature
·
low humidity
